Aunt Pauline was a character, she was..She lived in the New Orleans area all of my life and the tells she could tell. We went to visit her when I was a small girl, 6 or 7 I recall. She took the good baptist folk to Bourbon Street! I remember the bright lights and the "barker's" standing in the doorways of the saloons trying to entice us inside...My mother the sunday school teacher, public school bus driver, nearly jerked my arm off of my body dragging me down the street & while attempting to cover my eyes nearly poked them out so I couldn't see the "ladies" inside..Oh but a memory I have of one swinging through the air with mirror all around that made it seem like they were everywhere..I thought they were so pretty and I would grow up to be pretty like them, that is until I was old enough to understand what I had seen!! Oh My! No wonder my dad said," I think not!"
Then there's the time she broke her ankle...I don't think any of us will forget this event in our lives! She came to Shreveport for a visit to stay with her sister, my grandmother, Mildred. She drank beer, smoked and cursed like a sailor. O' dear Lord when she figured out she could could ram a clothes hanger down inside of the full leg cast she had so she could scratch her itching leg & ankle..As I think back about it, she looked like a dog with fleas!! The pleasure from the scratch...
By the way, did you ever teach that bird to say anything else but curse words?
Oh, how you are missed!!!
