Joe J. Lynch, along with two others, was arrested for suspicion of the theft of sugar from a wholesale grocery business. The three men were being transported from Picher, Oklahoma, to Miami, Oklahoma, when a gun battle occurred between Lynch and the two men who were transporting the men. Lynch was shot and died a few hours later at the Miami hospital, with his wife and son at his side. The two transporters, a Joplin detective and a wholesale grocer, were killed during the incident.
