Graduate of Abilene High School, he attended Hardin-Simmons for two years prior to enlisting in the Army on February 21, 1943. He was a cheerleader at HSU and on the Cowboy track team.

FUNERAL HERE WEDNESDAY FOR ABILENIAN KILLED IN AIR ACTION
Body of 2d Lt. George H. Blackburn, Jr., Abilene airman who was killed overseas during World War II, arrived in Abilene by train Monday night for reburial in Cedar Hill cemetery. The body was brought to the United States from Henri Chappelle cemetery in Belgium.
Lieutenant Blackburn was the son of George H. Blackburn, Sr., route 5, Abilene. He was killed on March 10, 1945, while piloting a P-51 Mustang in air action over Germany. He had been assigned to the 359th fighter group based in England.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm. Wednesday in the University Baptist church. Dr. Truett Walton, dean of students at Hardin-Simmons university. Dr. R. N. Richardson, HSU president, the Rev. Bryon Bryant of San Antonio and the Rev. Glenn Wilson of Elmdale, will officiate at the service. Music will be provided by the university quartet. Military burial rites will be in the family lot in Cedar Hill under direction of Kiker-Warren Funeral home.
This will be the first funeral in Abilene for a returned war dead.
Body of Lieutenant Blackburn was accompanied to Abilene by escort Capt. Fred Peterman.
Lieutenant Blackburn, a former student of Abilene high school, was a junior in Hardin-Simmons when he enlisted in the air corps on Feb. 21, 1943. He trained at San Marcos, San Antonio and Bonham. On May 23, 1944 he received his wing and commission. Lieutenant Blackburn had served four months overseas prior to his death.
