He was a pitcher with the Cleveland Blues of the National League and the Brooklyn Trolley-Dodgers of the American Association. He compiled a lifetime record of 51-83. He also played infield and outfield as well. After his major league career was over, he became a college baseball coach at Yale, Lehigh and Princeton. While at Yale, one of his players was Amos Alonzo Stagg, who later went on to become a famous college football coach. Harkins and Stagg would remain friends for more than 50 years. John Harkins was one of the first pitchers from New Jersey to make good in the major leagues.
