Born at Wales in Erie county, New York. This is a rural area just outside of Buffalo on the western border of New York, just inland from Lake Erie.

Every written entry of her name during her lifetime showed her middle name as Eliza, and never, not even once, as Elizabeth.

The 1850 U.S. census for Buffalo, New York shows that her family included a 10-year-old daughter named Eliza.

Daughter of Joseph Merriam (1782-1866) and Clara Hudson Merriam (1787-1869). Her parents were said to have been married ~68 years . . . which means that they married as young teenagers. This would explain why they moved from New York State to Ontario, Canada, effectively breaking away from Clara's family (Joseph was an orphan).

Wife of Sayre Beach (1806-1878), married July 5, 1830 in Drummondville, Stamford, Ontario, Canada.

Mother of Clara, Frances, Augustus, Lucy, Eliza, Mary, and Joseph Beach.

Cause of death, as listed on her death record: Old Age.

Her Meriam / Merriam lineage was as follows:

--William (d. 1566) of Kent, England
--William (1564-1635) of Kent, England [about 2 years old when his father died]
--Joseph (abt 1600-1641) of Kent, England and Concord, Massachusetts [about 6 years old when his father died]
--Joseph (1629-1677) of Kent, England and Concord, Massachusetts [about 11 years old when his father died]
--Robert (1667-1717) of Concord and Lexington, Massachusetts Colony [about 10 years old when his father died]
--Joseph (1696-1745) of Lexington, Massachusetts Colony [about 19 years old when his father died]
--Robert (1738-1782) of Lexington, Massachusetts [about 7 years old when his father died]
--Joseph (1782-1866) of Tyringham (now called Monterey), Massachusetts; Welland county, Ontario, Canada; and Conneaut, Ashtabula, Ohio [not yet born when his father died]

Caroline Eliza Merriam was descended from a very long line of men who were -- almost all of them -- raised by their widowed mothers.
