Elmira Advertiser, Elmira, New York - March 26, 1918.

The death of Alonzo A. West occurred at his home, 1568 Lake street, early Monday morning, coming as the climax of a long illness, patiently borne. Mr. West was born in Rochester, N.Y., February 28, 1845. When a lad of 17 years he enlisted in Company II, of his home city, a part of the Fifty-fourth Regiment of the United States Army. A portion of Mr. West's military service was spent in Elmira guarding the prison camp, which was located in the western part of the city. At the close of the war Mr. West studied medicine and practiced for a short time until in 1871. He went into the drug business at Oil City, Pa. This was during the height of the great oil excitement in that region. In 1873 he changed his location to Karns City, Pa., another oil center, and there continued his drug business several years. During that period of his career Mr. West was very unfortunate, having been a victim of disastrous fires which burned him out three times within a few years, and suffering heavy losses. In 1885 Mr. West came to Elmira and with his family located in the Lackawanna Railroad section, and established himself in the drug business at the southwest corner of Lake street and East Washington avenue, where he continued for over twenty years, retiring about a decade ago because of failing health, but with a competency. While in Oil City Mr. West early became identified with the order of Knights of Pythias, and although never affiliating in Elmira, retained his membership in his parent lodge. In Elmira he was a member of the Lake Street Presbyterian Church. In 1868 Mr. West married Miss Lida A. Young, of Rochester, N.Y. There survive, Mrs. West, the widow, and two children, one daughter, Mrs. G. W. Diven, and the son, F. A. West, well known business man and Alderman for the First Ward. There are also three grandchildren, who are George M. Diven, jr., Marion West and Kenneth York West. The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the late residence on Lake street.
