He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Rfn Fentiman was killed as a result of small arms fire during a foot patrol near Sangin in central Helmand Province.

In civilian life he studied mechanical engineering and worked a regional sales manager for a software firm. He volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan and mobilised in June 2009. He was described as a bright and professional soldier with considerable potential. Fen, as he was known, had a kind and cheerful manner that was a constant source of morale for his unit. The nickname Chosen Man, as shown on the wreaths in the photos, originally referred to a "chosen man" who would take control of the section if the Corporal was to be killed or wounded. He also enjoyed playing rugby and was a member of the Cambridge Rugby Club from 1993 to 2004.
