Col. James Archbald was born in 1866 in Scranton. He graduated from Yale University. He came to Schuylkill County to manage his mother's family's holdings, the Albright Coal Company in Llewellyn. His mother's maiden name was Albright and her family donated the Albright Library to Scranton, Pa. Archbald soon won over the heart of Margaretta Thompson, the daughter of Heber Thompson, who managed the Girard Estate. When Heber Thompson died in 1911, Colonel Archbald took over this managerial position and moved into the Thompson Building at 1501 Mahantongo Street. He later became Vice President of the Miners National Bank. He was one of the founders of the Pottsville Motor Club and was a striking figure in his jodhpurs, boots and fedora hat. John O'Hara had a stormy relationship with Archbald's daughter, Margaretta from 1922 to 1930.
