Death: Nov. 16, 2009

Actor. He was a distinguished performer with a 50-year career in theatre, films and television. He is best remembered by American audiences for his Golden Globe-winning role as 'Robert McCall' in the hit series "The Equalizer" (1985-1989). Woodward was educated at Kingston College and studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before gaining experience with different repertory companies in Scotland and England. He established himself during the 1950s as a solid theater presence, debuting on the London stage in "Where There's a Will" (1955); he performed in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" and "Hamlet" while finding steady work on British television in such programs as "Sir Francis Drake", "The Saint" and "Armchair Mystery Theatre". He achieved international recognition during the 1960s in the Broadway productions "Rattle of a Simple Man" (1963, his debut), "High Spirits" (1964 to 1965), "The Best Laid Plans" (1966), and roles in the pictures "Becket" (1964) and "The File of the Golden Goose" (1969). He furthered his success with a starring role in the series "Callan" (1967-1972) and memorable performances in the films "The Wicker Man" (1973), "Breaker Morant" (1980), the 1984 television-movie "A Christmas Carol" and as host of the Emmy Award-winning documentary "Remembering World War II" (1989). His last role was in the British serial "EastEnders", months prior to his death. In addition to acting, Woodward enjoyed a successful career as a vocalist, with over a dozen recordings to his credit. His second wife was actress Michele Dotrice. Woodward had had bouts with ill health since the 1980s when he suffered a heart attack during "The Equalizer" years, and underwent triple bypass surgery. Later he battled prostate cancer. He died from complications of several ailments, including pneumonia. (bio by: C.S.)
