William Johnson III was born in Charleston, son of James Slidell Johnson and Eleanor Sophia (Reid) Johnson. He was a merchant in Charleston and a Confederate soldier. He served as senior warden of Grace Episcopal Church, where a Sunday school building was named in his honor. He was a member of the St. Cecilia Society, Phoenix Fire Engine Company, Huguenot Society, and Society for the Relief of Widows and Orphans of the Clergy.
