Daniel Harvey Hill
Birth: Jul. 12, 1821
Death: Sep. 24, 1889

Civil War Confederate Lieutenant General. Active in education until the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a Colonel superintendent of the North Carolina Military Institute in 1861. Promoted Brigadier General in July, 1861, he commanded the Department of North Carolina, forces at Leesburg, Potomac District, Department of Northern Virginia and was promoted Major General in March, 1862. In 1863, he led the 2nd Corps, Army of Tennessee in actions through South Mountain, Antietam and was promoted Lieutenant General of the Department of North Carolina and Southern Virginia. His last battle with the Army of Virginia came at Fredericksburg and he then returned to command the Department of North Carolina. His next action came as a volunteer on General Beauregard's staff at Drewry's Bluff and Petersburg. He finished out the war with Joseph E. Johnston's army in the Carolinas as a division commander. After the surrender he returned to education and engaged in literary and historical writing. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
