In 1789 or 1790, John Sherrick age 20 approximately and single immigrated from Hempfield Twp, Lancaster Co, Pa to Tyronne Twp, Fayette Co, Pennsylvania. The Sherrick parents were Joseph Sherrick and Susan Strickler, farmers in Hempfield Township, Lancaster Co, Pa. Their house located on Kinderhook Road was used as a dwelling house for many years. On May 3, 1791 John Sherrick bought 142 1/2 acres of land in Tyronne Township, Fayette County, a tract lying along the west side of Galley Run between Morgan and Owensdale. He shows up on the 1791 tax list as a single man. John married Nancy/Ann Stauffer 16 September 1791. Anna Stauffer was the daughter of emigrants Abraham Stauffer and Ann Nissley, Mennonites. John and Anna had 13 children, Susanna, Nancy, Mary, Barbara, Abraham, Catherine, Elizabeth, Fannie, John Sherrick Jr, Joseph, Sarah, Martin and Magdalena. John's brother was a Mennonite preacher. They don't know if Joseph was ordained before or after he went to western Pennsylvania. Besides farming and raising a family, John Sherrick inherited the old Sherrick farm from his father Joseph, called "Sherrick's Station". There John built the first coke ovens in that region. The coal that was used was from The Old Eagle Pit. Sherrick's Station was so called due to the large coke and coal interests the family owned at that point. John Sherrick became a leading merchant and banker of Mt Pleasant, Westmoreland county. John and Anna Sherrick nee Stauffer were among the early pioneers of Fayette Co, removing here from Berks Co. Pa.
