Troost rebeled against the art deco style of the 1910s and 1920s, and designed structures based on a classical, rather austere style. This made him Hitler's favorite architect, and he was engaged to create several buildings for Munich, where the Nazi party was founded. Some of Troost's Munich designs included the Haus der Deutschen Kunst, Fuehrerbau, Verwaltungsbau, redesign of the "Brown House" and the Koenigsplatz, and the Ehrentempel open-air crypts for the Nazi martyrs. Troost's wife Gerdy was engaged by Hitler as an interior decorator.
