James R. "Papaw Jim" Carpenter, 81, Eighth Street, retired co-owner of the Whistle Stop Pop Shop, husband of Bonnie Jean Mastin Carpenter, died Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Bourbon Community Hospital. He was born June 21, 1925 in Bath County, son of the late Charles and Amanda Barker Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter was a driver for Grapette Bottling Company for 42 years and drove the Meteer School van for 12 ½ years. He is also survived by a daughter, Peggy (Mike) Toy, Paris; a son, William Earl Carpenter, Paris; three grandchildren, Michael (Stephanie) Toy, Paris, Donald Joe Toy, Paris, April (Jamie) Smith, Cynthiana; four great grandchildren, Trey Smith, Joshua Smith, Jacqueline Smith, Chelsie Toy; a sister, Margaret (Earl) Reed, Carlisle; special nephew, James Ralph (Carol) Carpenter; and several other nieces and nephews. Mr. Carpenter was preceded in death by three brothers, Boyce, Clarence, and Charles Carpenter. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, at the Hinton-Turner Funeral Home by Rev. Wayne Spivey with interment in the Carpenter Cemetery, Polksville. Casket bearers will be Jamie Smith, Joe Toy, Michael Toy, Roger Reed, Clarence E. "Sonny" Carpenter, Jamie Carpenter, Charlie Carpenter, and Mickey Denton. Honorary bearers will be Bill Buckner, James Richardson, Louie Richardson, April Smith, Stephanie Toy, Chelsie Toy, Jacqueline Smith, Joshua Smith, Trey Smith, Rick Sheeby, Charles Edward Johnson, Ralph Carpenter, and Jeff Carpenter. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.
