The Mohawk Valley Herkimers & Allied Families, compiled by Hazel Patrick, Jane Spellman & William Watkins, (New York: Herkimer County (NY) Historical Society, 1989) shows the parents of Mary Blevney as Emily Herkimer (daughter of Judge John Herkimer and Sarah Tenley) and Amos Foster. The pages also detail other members of the family.

John Herkimer m 1st 20 Jan 1793 (FPRC1-47) Polly Brown b @1776 d between 1814-25; m 2nd 26 April 1825 at Deer Park, Orange Co., NY Sarah Tenley (PR) b ca 1808 in Maryland, d 10 Nov 1886 at Newark, NJ. Buried at HHC (ET 11-13-1886).

The Biographical Directory of the American Congress lists John Herlimer’s death date as 8 June 1848 ae 73. His widow’s pension application papers gives the date of death as 7 June 1845 & 7 June 1847. The probate papers on his estate say he died “on or about the last of May or the first day of June 1845.” Finally, an obituary (Utica Daily Gazette 6-21-45) says that he died 18 June 1845 ae 72. His grave, in the HHC, is unmarked . Take your choice.

John Herkimer’s first wife has often been called Polly Tyler. However, the only primary source found, thus far, is the marriage record in which she is listed as Polly Brown. Nothing more has yet been found to identify her parents.

John and Polly Herkimer resided in General Herkimer’s house until 1814, when it was sold to John Van Orden of Catskill. Also in that year, Polly made a “candlewick” counterpane (in the Herkimer Home SHS Collection) on which she recorded her age as 39 yrs. Thus she was born @1775. No further record of Polly has been found. Her death date is unknown, and if, as supposed, she is buried in the HHC, her grave is unmarked.

John Herkimer’s second wife, Sarah Tenley, was born @1808, (some 9 years after the birth of his youngest daughter by his first wife), probably near Washington, D.C. Their marriage, in 1825, occurred shortly after the conclusion of John’s term in Congress. After John’s death, Sarah resided in Town of Danube with her son-in-law, Isaac Vincent. About 1880, she removed to Newark, NJ with that family.

John Herkimer was several times a Circuit Court Judge. He was elected a member of the New York State Assembly in 1800, 1804, and 1806 and was a member of the state constitutional convention in 1801. He was a Major in the War of 1812 and commanded a battalion of NYS Militia at Sackets Harbor on 29 May 1813. He served in the U.S.
