Lt.Col., U.S. Marine Corps, WW II, Korean War.
Raised in Abilene, TX, he joined the military in 1941 and served as a fighter pilot in the South Pacific. He was a Commanding Officer of VMF-251, a squadron of F8U Crusader Jets. He retired from the military in 1964, and was recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross with four stars, the Air Medal with 12 stars, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two stars, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
He worked for the Naval Air Systems Command in Northern Virginia from 1965 until 1982, where he developed pilot training programs and managed procurement and logistic support of Flight Simulation Trainers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite "Peggy" Morris Poor, whom he married on January 1, 1949 in Santa Ana, CA. She died on April 1, 2009. They had met through her twin brother "Jiggs,", who was also a Marine pilot and had flown with him. He was also preceded in death by his parents, John & Callie Poor, and his older brother, Vernon Poor in 1965.
Survivors include daughters, Debbie MacKillop of Colorado, Penny Rosenwinkel and her husband Ken Rosenwinkel of Illinois, & Robin Etter and her husband Scott Etter of Florida; son and daughter-in-law, Michael & Kathleen Poor of Virginia; grandchildren, Sarah, Laurie, Jamie, Rachael, Malcolm, Jeffrey, Mara, Forrest, & Natalie; great-grandson, Judah Stellwagen, born to granddaughter and her husband, Ben & Laurie Stellwagen; his brothers, John Lewis "J.L." Poor of Texas & Elton Poor of New Mexico, and his sister, Janis Merrill of Texas.
Interment with full military honors was conducted on Monday, October 27, 2009.
