Retired Oak Ridge Obstetrician, 75, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died of cancer Sunday, July 30, 1995 at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville. Dr. DePersio was a former resident of Oak Ridge and practiced obstetrics and gynecology at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge from 1951 to 1981. During that time, he served on a rotating basis as chief of obstetrics and gynecology on the medical staff of the hospital. He had lived in Port St. Lucie for the past 13 years.
Born in New York, he was the son of Dominick and Martha McCarthy DePersio. He was a graduate of Villanova University where he played varsity golf, and was a graduate of Creighton School of Medicine in Omaha, Neb. Dr. DePersio served his internship at Misericordia Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. During World War II, he served two years as a lieutenant, junior grade, with the Navy Medical Corps, and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Creighton. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church for 30 years and was active with the boys' basketball program at St. Mary's School. He was a member of the Roane Anderson Medical Society and of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a past president of the Oak Ridge Country Club where he was twice club golf champion and active with junior golf. Dr. DePersio was a member of the Holy Family Parish in Port St. Lucie.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosemary Nelson DePersio; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary Elaine Hendrix of Atlanta, Ga., Joanne and Richard Ramsey of Belmont, Mass., Susan and Dr. Steven Smith of Knoxville and Patricia and Thomas Clarke of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Kenneth and Colleen DePersio of Champaign, Ill., Thomas Nelson and Patricia DePersio of Oak Ridge and Dr. John Edward and Marianne DePersio of Knoxville. Dr. DePersio is also survived by a sister, Muriel DePersio of Ridgewood, N.J.; a brother, Dr. John DePersio of Oak Ridge; and by 17 grandchildren.
A son, Robert Michael DePersio, and brother, the Rev. Edward DePersio, died earlier.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 2 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with Richard Ramsey, Dr. Steven Smith, Thomas Roman Clarke II serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 1 at MARTIN OAK RIDGE FUNERAL HOME. A Rosary will be said at 8.
