He enjoyed a career of more than 60 years in the sport. Born in Los Angeles, he served in the United States Navy during World War II. As a boxer, he amassed 250 amateur fights before turning professional in 1947. He compiled a record of 23 wins (8 knockouts), 9 losses and 3 draws before retiring as a fighter in 1957. Among the opponents he fought include future Lightweight Champion Carlos Ortiz. As a referee or judge, he was involved in more than 80 championship bouts. Among his highlights include serving on the judge's panel for the highly publicized Middleweight Championship bout with Marvin Hagler and "Sugar" Ray Leonard in 1987 and the Welterweight Championship fight with "Sugar" Shane Mosley and Oscar De La Hoya in 2000. In addition, he had acting roles in the "Rocky" film series. Filippo was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and served as their president. He died from a stroke. (bio by: C.S.)
