WWI, Private, 3236, 6th Battalion on Enlistment, 8 July 1915.

On his enlistment records with the NAA, Herbert Ashley states his age at enlistment on 8 July 1915 as 21 years 11 months.
On enlistment, he lists his occupation as Cutter, boot trade. He was single and listed his next of kin as his father, George Ashley of Abbotsford, Vic. His physical attributes are listed as 5 ft 7 1/2 inches, and weight 9 stone. His complexion was listed as sallow, with blue eyes and black hair. He had an old vaccination scar and burn scars on his forearm. His right eye is listed as "defective". He gave his religion as Baptist.
He embarked from Australia on 11 October 1915 and went to Egypt. He was taken to Marseilles France on 30 March 1916. He was wounded on 7 May 1916 with multiple gunshot wounds, thigh and foot. He rejoined his unit in France on 30 July 1916. He was shot again in the foot on 26 October 1917, after returning from leave to the UK. He rejoined his unit and was wounded yet again, details unknown and rejoined his again on 13 March 1918 and suffered no more injuries. He was again granted leave and went to the UK prior to discharge back into Australia on 12 May 1919.
His plaque refers to his wife, Elsie Victoria, Interred 29 July 1974.
