Officer Michael J. Vezzola, 54, of Wolcott Avenue, West Springfield, a 31 year officer in the West Springfield Police Department, passed away Thursday in Mercy Hospital.
He was born in Florida on April 7, 1955 to the late Aldo and Florence (Kelleher) Vezzola. Mike was a police officer for town of West Springfield for over 31 years. A graduate of West Springfield High School and Holyoke Community College.
Mike was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, where he was an Eucharistic minister and usher. Mike also a former president and vice president of the West Springfield chapter of UNICO, former president of the Springfield YMCA Pioneer Valley Club, member of the Italian American Police Association, I.B.P.O., and former president of of the West Springfield Patrolmen Association. He was also a community officer for 12 years.
Mike enjoyed biking and traveling and was an avid fan of the NY. Giants and the N.Y. Yankees, for whom he held on so courageously, until they won the World Series this week.
Even though he was given numerous awards for police work and community service over the years, Mike remained a very humble man.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his step father William Genovali.
Mike leaves his wife Lori Andruss-Vezzola, his daughters Gina Vezzola of Higganum, CT., Christie Vezzola of Wallingford, CT., his step daughter Ashley Boyle of Agawam, brother Louie Vezzola of Spfld., his mother-in-law Marie Andruss of Agawam., his cousin and longtime best friend Carmino Santaniello Jr., along with several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A special thanks and blessing for the dedicated care he received at the Mercy Medical I.C.U. Unit under the direction of Dr. George Karras. The family would also like to thank Dr. Vincent Ho and Wayne Heatherly, who had donated stem cells to Mike and was by his bedside when Mike passed away.
Funeral services will be held MON. 9 AM from the TOOMEY-O'BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 WETFIELD ST., followed by a 10 AM Liturgy of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Church, 387 Chestnut St., Spfld. Burial will follow in St. Michaels Cemetery, State St., Spfld. Calling hours will be held SUN. from 4 to 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mike Vezzola Criminal Justice Scholarship Fund, c/o W. Spfld Credit Union, 58 Union St., W. Spfld, MA 01089
