E. S. Fentress, Publisher Of Three Newspapers, Dies

Waco, Texas, Feb. 14 - E. S. Fentress, publisher of three major Texas newspapers, died in his sleep Wednesday at the age of seventy-four.

The former Kansas farm boy published the Waco Times-Herald and News-Tribune, Port Arthur News and Austin American-Statesman.

He had not been in active direction of the newspapers, however, since his eyesight began failing several years ago. His son, Harlon M. Fentress, is president of Newspapers, Inc., which publishes the newspapers.

A civic leader and philanthropist as well as a publisher, the elder Fentress donated heavily to Baylor University of Waco, helped establish McLennan County as a dairy center, and was instrumental in establishing Waco Technical High School.

Fentress and his former partner, Charles E. Marsh, at one time owned a dozen Texas newspapers, scattered over a wide area and including Cisco, Eastland, Ranger, Brownsville, Wichita Falls, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Port Arthur, Austin, Cleburne, Breckenridge, Lareda and Harlingen.

Later Fentress and Marsh concentrated their interests in Waco, Austin and Port Arthur. In about 1946 Fentress bought Marsh's interests.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilkerson-Hatch Funeral Chapel here. Burial will be in Waco's Oakwood Cemetery.

Survivors, besides the son, include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Ralph R. Brown of Corsicana; a sister, Mrs. Harry Newman of Richmond, Ind.; a granddaughter and three grandsons.
