According to the Dictionary of National Biography (v. 22, p. 227) Thomas Parker was described by Cotton Mather as 'one of the greatest scholars of the English nation...who was driven out...for his nonconformity to its unhappy ceremonies.' He emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony with other Wiltshire men on the "Mary & John" of London in Mar 1634, settling first at Agawam (later called Ipswich)and then, went on with others, to be the first settlers of Newbury in 1635. He was chosen the first pastor of the church at Newbury where he died, unmarried, 24 Apr 1677, in his 82nd year.
