Mayor Hefner's Services Monday
Services for Robert A Hefner Sr. former mayor of Oklahoma City and Ardmore, will be Monday at 2pm in First Baptist Church. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Mausoleum directed by Hahn-Cook Street and Draper Funeral Home.
Hefner died Friday in his home at 201 NW 14. He was 96. He had been retired for several years and ill the past year.
Hefner was already 65 when he was drafted by civic leaders to run for mayor in 1939. He was re-elected in 1904 to a second term but did not run again in 1947. During his terms as mayor he was a key figure in development of the reservoir that is named after him.He also was instrumental in getting Tinker Air Force Base located here.
He was born at Lone Oak,TX and moved to Stephens County when he was10, where his father bought160 acres of land.
When Hefner was 21, his father suffered a paralyzing illness. The farm was sold to satisfy the mortgage with the final payment being extracted as one year's hard labor from the younger Hefner.
When he reached 22 and freedom from the debt, he attended North Texas Baptist College, then located at Jacksboro, and arrived with only 33 cents in his pockets.
He studied two years at the college and met his future wife, Eva Maurine Jackson Johnson. They were married in 1906.
He received his law degree from the University of Texas in 1902 and setup his first law practice in Beaumont, TX. He later moved to Ardmore and specialized in oil and gas law.
He was elected to the State Supreme Court in 1902 and voluntarily resigned after one term.
The family prefers memorials be made to the Oklahoma Memorial Association of which Hefner was an ardent supporter and benefactor.
Survivors include two sons, Robert A Jr, 1703 Randel Road, and William J, 7301 Lancet Lane, and a daughter Mrs. Lee Combs Jr., Los Angeles; a granddaughter; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren.
