Tom was born on July 17, 1908, the only son of Gus and Maggie (née Fullingim) Pickett. His paternal grandfather was Colonel George Pickett of Civil War fame. Since early childhood Tom was a member of the Methodist Church. He received his early education in the Decatur schools, and later he attended the North Texas State Teachers College at Denton, Texas.

Immediately after he left school, he became associated with the Lone Star Gas Company on May 31, 1929, as a member of the Inspection Department. His district included the territory from Denton, Texas, to Purcell, Oklahoma.

His promising career was abruptly terminated by an attack of typhoid fever, which resulted in his death after a brief illness of only two weeks. Tom was just a few days shy of his twenty-fifth birthday. He was not married.

[This biographical sketch has been taken from a biography written by G. M. Mills, foreman of the East Central Division inspection crew of the Lone Star Gas Company. G. M. was the husband of Estelle (née Fullingim) Mills, who was Tom's first cousin.]
