Activist. American Indian Movement (AIM) activist who was killed in a controversial shootout with F.B.I. agents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, an event known as, "The Incident at Oglala." He was born Joseph George, a Coeur d'Alene indian, on the Lapwai Reservation in Idaho. At the age of seven, he was placed in a government-run indian boarding school in Indiana, where he was later adopted by an older white couple named Stuntz.
