iv MARY ANN BARBER, the second daughter of Lyman Barber and Elizabeth Ann Judy, was born 31 Oct 1854 near Troy, Madison County, Illinois. She died 5 Apr 1921 at Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana, age 66 years, 5 months, 6 days.

Mary Ann, usually called Mollie, was married 7 Apr 1870 at Troy, Illinois
to Robert Murphy, Jr. He was born 15 Feb 1844 in Macoupin Co., Illinois,
the son of Robert Pllford Murphy (1810-1847) and Mary Ann Clark (1821-1892). Robert Murphy, Jr., died in Piatt County, Illinois, 3 Aug 1900

Mollie grew up on the family farm near Troy, IL, and was not quite 16 years of age when she was married in 1870. The couple went to live on the groom's land he was farming in Cerro Gordo Township in Piatt Co., IL, and were listed there in the 1870 U.S. Census as 26 and 16 years of age; he was a farmer with a worth of $400.

Robert's father had died when the lad was only three, and the following year his mother had married Stillman Barber, brother of Lyman Barber. Young Robert lived at the family home in Madison County until he was about thirteen when he moved to Piatt Co. Having attended common school in Macoupin and Madison counties, he also received education at Decatur, IL.

A deed recorded in Book 9-175 of Piatt Co. describes the property in
section #32, Unity Township. It was deeded to Mary and Robert Murphy 18 Aug 1874 as a gift from her father, Lyman Barber. It was Lyman's habit to make a gift of land, usually in central Illinois, to each of his children upon their marriage. This farm was located near Milmine, and the young couple probably added more acreage to the original gift, as the Piatt County History mentions:

"120 acres possessed by the Murphys with good improvements, Including all necessary outbuildings, a comfortable dwelling," etc.

The History goes on that "Mr. Murphy is a reliable and public-spirited citizen, . . . though never desirous of making himself conspicuous. In politics he is a Republican. He and his wife belong to the (Pierson) Baptist Church, have high standing in that religious body, and are regarded with great respect."

The 1880 U. S. Census of Unity Township listed Robert Murphy, 35, farmer,
b IL, father b KY, mother b TN; Mary A., 25, keeps house, father B RI,
mother b IL; James A., 7; George , 5; Charles R., 3. No census found for
1890.

In 1900 the family was listed in Cerro Gordo Twp. with Robert Murphy,
b Feb 1844 IL, age 57; Mary A. b Oct 1853, 47; Walter, son, b Feb 1882, 18;
Jesse E., b Sept 1885, age 14. Robert's father was listed as b MO, mother b KY, probably an error. Walter L. Murphy was listed below, b Feb 1883, age 17, daylaborer. In Unity Twp., James A. Murphy was a farmer, b July 1875 (an error), age 27; wife Ada B., b June 1878, 22; and Lela G., b Dec 1898, one yr.

Mary Ann Murphy continued to farm with her boys, at least for a time. The 1902/03 Directory of Champaign and Urbana listed Mary A. Murphy, widow of Robert, as a resident at 1109 W. Stoughton St., Urbana, with Walter L. Murphy, a student at the same address. This is located near the University
of Illinois campus In the north-central part of Urbana.

At the time of the death of Henry Herrin 16 May 1910, the address of Mrs.
Mary Murphy was listed as Upper Alton, IL; her son Charles was of Arcola; and
her son James of Hammond, IL.

Mary Ann Murphy, widow, died 5 Apr 1921 at the Good Samaritan Hospital, Kokomo, Indiana, of an obstruction of the bowels.

She had been visiting her son, Charles Murphy, of 1027 S. Courtland, Kokomo,, for three weeks. A brief obituary in the Kokomo Daily Tribune 5 Apr 1.921 listed her home as Pierson, Illinois.

Survivors Included five sons: Charles of Kokomo; James of Hammond, IL; George of Coffeyville, KS; Walter of Vicksburg, MS; and Jesse of Detroit, MI; also one sister, Mrs. Martha Herrin of Ewing, IL.

Burial was at Mackville Cemetery, Atwood, IL, beside her husband.
