He was a graduate of the University of Arizona, and the University of Kansas, where he earned a doctorate degree in Sports Administration. He spent 26 years in the National Football League as an assistant defensive coach. He began his coaching career in the Cleveland Browns organization in 1982, where he spent the next seven seasons, followed by 19 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. As a member of the Kansas City Chiefs staff, he served as a defensive backs and quality control coach, responsible for scouting and defensive game day planning and preparation. He appeared in 14 playoff games during his coaching career as an assistant, nine with the Kansas City Chiefs and five with the Cleveland Browns. Prior to joining the NFL, he worked as an offensive line coach at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado from 1976 to 1977, a conditioning and strength coach at Tulane University from 1978 to 1979, and as a tight ends and tackles coach at the University of Mississippi from 1980 to 1981.
