Birth: May 10, 1837
Clark County
Ohio, USA
Death: Nov. 10, 1919
Breckenridge
Gratiot County
Michigan, USA

Isaac Painter, a son of Andrew and Catherine Painter, was born in Ohio, probably in Clark County, where his family was enumerated in 1840 and 1850. He moved probably in the late 1850s to Champaign County, Illinois, where his father and brother George also moved.

In Champaign County, Isaac Painter married Mrs. Barbara Ann McLain (née Hillsberry) on 10 July 1859. She brought her three sons* into the marriage; the couple would have three more children. Isaac and Barbara Painter's household was enumerated in 1860 in the county. He was a farm laborer on his father-in-law Harmon Hillsberry's farm in East Bend Township, and inherited a portion of the farm when the latter died in 1862.

Isaac Painter enlisted as a private on 23 February 1865, and mustered the same day in Company I, 155th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, for one year of service. According to his enlistment papers, Isaac was a farmer, age 26, born in Clark County, Ohio. He was 6 feet, 1 inch tall; had black hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion. (Among those who also enlisted and mustered into Company I on the same day was his wife's brother, Moses Hillsberry.) With his regiment, Private Painter guarded a railroad in Tennessee, and was mustered out on 4 September 1865. Afterwards, Isaac Painter returned to his family and farming in Illinois.

His wife Barbara died in Champaign County, and was buried there at Willowbrook Cemetery. Although Isaac also had his name inscribed on the marker, expecting to live his remaining years in Illinois, he moved in 1913 with his younger son's family to Gratiot County, Michigan, where he died at age 82 and was buried.

Isaac Painter's date of birth on this death certificate is consistent with his age reported in census enumerations.

My grandfather recalled his great-uncle Isaac Painter wearing his Union Army uniform and blowing a bugle.

*Isaac Painter's stepsons were:
Anthony Hillsberry,
• Phillip Hillsberry, and
Samuel McClain.
