Joseph Wesley Wyatt, one of nine children born to Oliver L. Wyatt and Margaret Westfall Wyatt, was born July 5, 1907, in Montana Township, Jewell County, Kansas, and passed away March 15, 1988, in Brodstone Memorial Hospital at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 10 days.
He attended school at Pleasant Valley, Kansas.
He lived in Montana Township, Jewell County, Kansas, until 1935, and moved to Superior. He was married to Esther D. Petersen on February 18, 1931. This union was blessed with three sons. He farmed south of Superior and had a large watermelon patch which was visited many times by the local people. They moved from Superior to a farm near Hardy, Nebraska. He did carpenter work for the Hardy lumber yard and many area people.
He enjoyed fishing, boating and being on the water. He also enjoyed gardening.
On March 14, 1975, he was married to Ellen Mentzer Vandusen. They lived in Superior until ill health forced a move to a care center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brother (sic), Emmett and Everett, two sisters, Mabel Jacobitz and an infant sister.
He is survived by his wife Ellen of Superior; three sons, Merwyn and his wife June of Superior, Joe Allen and his wife Wanda of Denver, and George and his wife Lilly of Manhattan, Kansas; a step-son, Dennis Vandusen and his wife Lois of Kearney; a step-daughter, Robin and her husband Jim May of Blue Hill; a sister, Myrtle Garner of Maryville, Missouri; three brothers, Arthur and his wife Millie of Olney Spring, Colorado, Rex and his wife Irene of Roswell, New Mexico, and Max and his wife Enda of Granby, Colorado; his mother and father-in-law, Blanche and Ira Somerhalder of Grafton; 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 18, 1988, at 10:00 a.m. from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, Nebraska, with Pastor David Loeschen officiating. Music was provided by Carol Shambaugh, soloist, singing, "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden" with Carlita Price as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were: Randy Wyatt, Terry Wyatt, Ed Vannice, Richard Rhoads, Jerry Applegate and Les Manning. Burial was in the Hardy Cemetery near Hardy, Nebraska. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior was in charge of the arrangements.
