| Birth: | Aug. 18, 1918 San Diego San Diego County California, USA | | Death: | Oct. 26, 2009 Carmel Monterey County California, USA | Editor, Publisher. Born Cordner Bruce Nelson with a fascination for Olympic track events, he created Track & Field News into the sport's premier monthly magazine. He became interested in the sport not as an athlete but as a spectator, when he attended track and field events at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In 1948, he founded "Track & Field News," gathered track-meet results and wrote stories in addition to editing. Covering the sport for more than a half-century and attending 15 Olympics, he originated the magazine's now-authoritative annual world rankings, as determined by an international panel. As of 2009, "Track & Field News" is regarded as "the Bible of the Sport," and is a world wide perspective magazine. He wrote articles for diets, weight training, interval training and insights for high-intensity activity running, as well as other field sports. His special interest was in the mile run, which led him to write "The Jim Ryun Story" (1967), "The Milers" (1985) and other books. In 1988, he was elected into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. Cause of death: T-cell lymphoma. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
