Spanish American war survivor dies in Milwaukee
Michael Souhrada, 95, resident of Oxford Junction until 1970, died Sunday, June 1, 1975 in Veterans hospital in Milwaukee, Wis., where he had been a resident since 1970. He was a survivor of the Spanish American war, and had the distinction of being senior member of the hospital. Services were held on Wednesday, June 4 at Sacred Heart Catholic church in Oxford Junction. The Rev. R. J. Sigwarth officiated. Burial was in Mayflower cemetery. Military graveside services were held by Wapsie Legion Post. he was born on Feb. 24, 1880 in Pisek, Czechoslovakia, the son of John and Anna Tichy Souhrada.He came to the United States at the age of two years. At 18 he volunteered for service in the Spanish-American in July 1898 and served in Cuba for five months. He was mustered out in Savannah, Ga. in May 1899.
He worked for many years for the Milwaukee railroad and was a foreman at 21 and section foreman until his retirement. He served between Oxford Junction and Chicago. He married Mary Zak in 1899 in Oxford Junction; she died in 1942. In 1944 he married Mrs. Florence Powlishta, who also preceded him in death. He was a charter member of VFW and was included in all activities of the American Legion Wapsie post at Oxford Junction, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church and was on the Oxford Junction city council for 25 years. He was a great fisherman and played drums in the former Oxford Junction Bohemian band. He is survived by two sons, Arthur and Albert Souhrada, Milwaukee, Wis., four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. he was the last surviving member of his family of 17.Pallbearers were Charles Buresh, Ervin Hansen, Otto Lasack, Joe Ruley, Marlin
Latare and Ray Sobotka.
Michael Souhrada, 95, one of the 15 remaining Spanish-American War Veterans in Iowa, died Sunday at Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oxford Junction, with the Rev. R. J. Sigwarth officiating. Burial will be in Mayflower Cemetery where military services will be conducted. Visitation is Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Funeral Home, Oxford Junction, with the Rosary at 7:30 p.m.
