MARRIED HIS STENOGRAPHER LAST WEDNESDAY
Ceremony at the Home of the Bride's Aunt - Arrived in Carthage Saturday
Col. William H. Phelps was wedded to his private secretary, Miss O'Leary, in Chicago, Illinois on the afternoon of Wednesday October 11 and arrived in Carthage with his bride Saturday.
The wedding took place at the home of the bride's sister in Chicago, where Miss O'Leary was visiting. It was a quiet affair, no one being present but Miss O'Leary's immediate relatives.
The couple left Chicago Thursday for St. Louis. A day was spent there and Carthage was reached Saturday, where intimate friends and relative were informed of the wedding. The members of the Phelps family knew of the wedding beforehand and it was a surprise only to the friends and public generally.
Just a month ago a rumor came across the ocean reporting that Col. Phelps and Miss O'Leary had been married in Paris, France. This was neither confirmed nor denied at the Phelps home here. It was known that Col. Phelps was in Europe and that Miss O'Leary was presumably in Ireland - and people could only surmise.
With the return of the colonel to Carthage two weeks ago, the mystery deepened, for he would neither confirm nor deny the rumor. He said that it was none of the public's business whether he was married or not.
Yesterday Col. Phelps said: "Yes, we are married and the wedding took place in Chicago last Wednesday - not in Paris, France a month ago. What started the Paris story I do not know. Miss O'Leary was not even in Paris during her trip. I knew nothing of the rumors concerning that affair until I landed in New York. I was vexed to be confronted by such reports. I could not admit the stories, of course, because they were not true and under the circumstances had I denied them my meaning might have been misconstrued."
Miss O'Leary who has become the wife of one of Missouri's best known men and leading Democratic politicians, is a comely young lady of about 35 years. She has been in the Phelps household for many years and for the last five or six years has been the colonel's stenographer and secretary having a more intimate knowledge of his private affairs than any other person. She is an unusually bright and cultured lady.

After their marriage in Chicago and he brought her home to Carthage to his classical revival, grandiose mansion built with Carthage stone at 1146 Grand avenue, and its 10 fireplaces each having different color tile with hand carved woodwork throughout plus a hand operated four floor elevator from basement to ballroom. It remaining (2015) one of the most elegant homes in Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri where she spent over fifty years of her life raising his and their children until her church ended up owning the home & grounds around 1959.
Their home was on the Victorian Home Tour: The Phelps House - 1146 Grand avenue - A classical revival built in late 1890's by W. H. Phelps, a prominent attorney. It has 10 fireplaces, all with different colored tile, and has beautiful, hand-carved woodwork. It has a hand-operated elevator serving 4 floors from the basement to the ballroom. Along with the Leggett house and Platt house, it is built of Carthage stone.
The home is now owned by Carthage Historic Preservation and is open for tours and appointments for weddings and gala celebrations.

MRS. W. H. PHELPS, PROMINENT CARTHAGE RESIDENT DIES AT 91; RITES WEDNESDAY
Mrs. W. H. Phelps, 91 prominent Carthage resident died at 1 a.m. yesterday at St. John's Hospital in Joplin.
Mrs. Phelps, a patient at St. John's Hospital since last July 15, had been gravely ill several days. She had been in failing health several years.
She was born February 6, 1871 in Ireland, and came to the United States when she was 18 years old. Sixteen years later she was married in Chicago to Colonel W. H. Phelps, a prominent early day Carthage attorney and Democrat leader within the state of Missouri.
Colonel Phelps served in both the house and state senate from Jasper county and was attorney for the Missouri Pacific many years. He died July 26, 1916, in St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota where he had undergone surgery.
THE PHELPS HOME AT 1146 GRAND AVENUE
Was sold about three years ago by Mrs. Phelps to St. Ann's Catholic Church parish. The carriage house on the property was remodeled and is used as the parish hall. St. Ann's parochial school now is under construction at the northeast portion of the property and the spacious home will be used as the convent for the Sisters who will operate the school, and for the school library.
Mrs. Phelps had two sons, both of whom preceded her in death. The older, Cyrus , died November 7, 1914 at the age of 8, of injuries received when he was struck by a car in front of the Phelps home on Grand. He was riding a bicycle at the time of the accident. The other son, George E. Phelps, prominent Carthage attorney died suddenly March 15, 1958 at the home, 1601 Grand Avenue.
