My husband's wonderful Mom.
Daughter of Thomas Edward Halbert & Jennie Elzenaar; granddaughter of Harrison Howe & Mary A. (McCarthy) Halbert and John Henry & Hendrieka (Klingenberg) Elzenaar.
My precious second mother (mother-in-law). We met one week after burying my own mama, when her family came out to our home for hubby and my wedding. From that moment on, she took over the "mothering" and always called me her first daughter.
Mom had one of the most tender hearts ever seen in a woman; it is no wonder she became a nurse. She'd tear up when she had to give a shot to one of the children and tears were always seen when we left her home. Her laugh was infectious and she always had a kind word for everyone.
Mom was born May 13, 1920 in Kalamazoo, MI, the daughter of Thomas and Jennie (Elzenaar) Halbert, and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1938, and the Bronson Hospital School of Nursing in 1941.
Married Holroyd Clayton Howe, January 15, 1945 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., MI. Husband and wife for almost 59 years and are the proud parents of three sons.
Mom was employed at Bronson and Borgess Hospitals, and then for 21 years for Dr. Edmund Talanda until her retirement. She was a member of Bethany Reformed Church and the Ruth Circle.
Surviving besides her husband, sons and daughter-in-laws are eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, a sister and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 grandsons, Stephen and Chad Howe; a brother, Gerald Halbert and a sister, Dorothy Rishel. Services were held at Bethany Reformed Church, with songs and eulogy by both granddaughters. The grandsons were honored to be pallbearers coming from as far away as Virginia and California.
Mom lived only 83 years, 5 months, 10 days and although she was ready to meet the Lord, we as a family were not ready to say goodbye. She would have loved to meet and get to know all of her now 19 great grand-children and five great-great grand babies.
I couldn't wait to get home and wanted to see a picture of your stone. Many thanks to Randy Emert for the photo.
