Dr. A. Ward Applegate, minister at Hinkle Creek Friends Church from 1918-23 and from 1958 until he retired this past summer, died at 11 p.m. Thursday in Florida.
Dr. Applegate, whose biography appears in the "Who's Who in the Mid-West" was born in Cicero, Sept. 25, 1893, son of Elmer Ellsworth and Adella Whisler Applegate. He was the second son in a family of five sons, and five daughters. He graduated from Cicero High School in 1911 and on Nov. 1, 1914 he and Lena Grace Lorenz were married. She died Apr. 28, 1965.
In 1968 he and Amy Baliff were married and she survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Esther Foster, Saudi Arabia; two grandchildren, David and Eldon Foster; five sisters, Catherine Durnell and Agnes Haworth, both of Cicero; Jeanette Randall, Westfield; Margaret Crosby, Roachdale; Clara Max Clark, Indianapolis; four brothers, Edward, John and Carl Applegate, all of Cicero and Waltz Applegate, Harrisburg, IL.
A son, Raymond Kenneth, died in 1944.
In addition to Hinkle Creek Friends, Dr. Applegate had also pastored churches in Centerville, Kokomo, Carmel and Wilmington, Ohio.
He was a 1929 graduate of Earlham College receiving the Bachelor of Arts Degree.
His appointments on Friends Committees include Executive Committee, Indiana Yearly Meeting and Wilmington Yearly meeting. He was on the American Friends Mission Board and was a member of the Friends World Committee and was a delegate and speaker at the World Conference in Oxford, England.
Also as a member of the World Committee, he had traveled around the world visiting Friends Missions in Cuba, Jamaica, Africa, Europe, and the Far East. During his round the world travels he delivered over 100 lectures.
He was a member of Rotary International joining the Kokomo club in 1930; the Wilmington, Ohio Club in 1940 and the Noblesville Rotary Club in 1958.
