John W. Applegate, a native and lifelong resident of the Cicero area, died Thursday evening, June 9,1977, at Riverview Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 70 years old.
Born Jan. 20,1907, he was the son of Kern and Adella (Whisler) Applegate. A retired farmer, he had been active for many years in the National Farmers Organization, the Cicero United Methodist Church, Hinkle Masonic Lodge and he owned and operated the Cicero Bowling Alley until 1964.
Mr. Applegate was a prolific writer on the topics of farm and agricultural economics and was among the most frequent to write letters to the editor of The Ledger.
Surviving with the widow, Maradith, are a daughter, Mrs. Carol Ann Breed, Madison, Wisc.; five sisters, Mrs. Jeanette Randall,R.6, Noblesville; Mrs. Clara Clark, Indianapols; Mrs. Margaret Crosby, Roachdale; Mrs. Agnes Bell and Mrs. Kathryn Durnell, both of Cicero; two brothers, Waltz and Edward Applegate, both of Cicero; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
