Son of Judge James H. Matheny. He was admitted to the Bar in 1877, and continuously practiced his profession. From 1895 to 1908 he devoted much attention to the affairs of the Illinois State Bar Association, being secretary and Treasurer from 1895 to 1906, Vice-President for the year 1906-07 and President for the year 1907-08.

James H. Matheny, one of the most prominent members of the Sangamon county bar and well known to Decatur lawyers, died at 6:30 o'clock yesterday evening at Springfield hospital. Death was the result of a complication of diseases. He was 62 years old. Mr. Matheny became ill more than two weeks ago. His illness became critical about one week ago and it was thought advisable to remove him to the hospital.

Mr. Matheny was born April 4,1856 at the family home in Springfield, and lived his entire life here. He graduated from the Springfield high school in 1873 and like his father and grandfather before him took up the law practice himself for his profession at an early age being admitted to practice law in 1877. Since that time he has continuously practiced the profession of his choice and was looked upon by his colleagues as a leading authority on civil and real estate law. From 1895 to the time of his death he devoted much of his time to the interests of the Illinois State Bar association. He was secretary and treasurer of that organization from 1895 to 1906, vice president for the years 1906 and 1907 and president in 1907 and 1908. For many years he had been associated in practice with his brother under the firm name of James H & Robert Matheny.
