Josephus Comer, son of Lewis P. and Catharine (Baum) Comer, was born August 26, 1834 in St. Joseph County, Michigan. In 1835 the Comer family moved to Morgan Prairie in what was soon to be Porter County in Indiana. There his father continued to farm and serve as minister.
A few days before Christmas, on December 20, 1861 in Porter County, Josephus married Harriet A. Marine, daughter of Asa and Mary (Crane) Marine. Josephus and Harriet became the parents of four children (in birth order): Clara G., William E., Ora J., and Bessie M. Comer.
Josephus was a farmer on Morgan Prairie. In 1876 he was appointed to be a Porter County commissioner. In 1882, Clara died at the age of eighteen. In 1883, Josephus, suffering from rheumatism, sold the farm. The next year, his wife died. Josephus and his two sons moved to Kansas where he was a carpenter. The youngest child, Bessie, remained in Indiana and was raised in the home of her uncle, John W. Marine.
In 1903, Josephus' sister, Henrietta (Comer) Fisher, went out to Kansas and brought Josephus back with her. He died in her home in Porter County a month later, on August 5, 1903.
