CIVIL WAR SERVICE: Charles enlisted 2 Mar 1865 at Augusta as a private in Co. G, 14th Maine Volunteer Infantry. His service was credited to the draft quota of his hometown of Troy. Described as a single farmer, 18 years of age, standing 5'6" with gray eyes & brown hair. He was mustered into active service the same day.
It is interesting to note that his brother, Clark, began serving in the same regiment on 6 Dec 1861.
The 14th Regt. had moved to Darien, Ga on June 9-10. Charles was with them when he died of disease.
