He was the third son of Peru, Massachusetts farmer Ward N. Stone and Mary E. (Ackert) (Ascha) Stone. He grew up and also worked as a farmer in Peru.
On 3 March 1891, age 25, he married Nellie M. Sylvester, a 21-year-old teacher from Cummington (they were married in Cummington by Samuel W. Powell, pastor of the Congregational church of Peru). They would have the following children: Mary E. Stone Deblois (b. 14 November 1891), Ralph Burdick Stone (1894-1899), Robert Dewey Stone (b. 15 May 1898), Melvin Leroy Stone (b. 17 June 1902), and Russell Conway Stone (b. 9 August 1903).
On 22 November 1892, Ward made an agreement and signed papers with Arunah Bartlett of Cummington, an early and distinguished settler who was then 95 years old and had no children. Ward agreed to move into his home on 150 acres in Cummington and take care of Bartlett "in his advanced age and feeble health" and attend "to all his wants in a spirit of kindness as long as he may live" in exchange for gaining possession of his land, which was bordered on the north by the farm of Charles Sylvester (Nellie Stone's father). Ward and Nellie inherited "the Arunah Bartlett Place" in 1894 when Arunah Bartlett died. They ran the farm, produced maple syrup, and raised their children there until Walter Lincoln Stone died unexpectedly on 17 March 1905 of influenza and pneumonia at the age of 39 years 10 months 15 days.
