Villanueva Sr.
YORKTOWN - Blas "Bill" Villanueva Sr., 85, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, after a long illness. Bill was born in San Narciso, Zambales, Philippines, in 1923, and was the son of the late Donato and Marcela Villanueva. Bill was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, in which he was awarded a purple heart. In addition, he was a 35-year retiree of the Merchant Marines, serving in Vietnam and Desert Storm.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Marcella Villanueva Weinberg; and nine siblings.
He is survived by four sons, Blas Villanueva Jr. and his wife, Linda of Yorktown; Ray Villanueva and his wife, Elba of Williamstown, N.J., Michael Villanueva Sr. and his wife, Desiree of Elletsville, Ind., and Christopher Villanueva of Wilmington, N.C.; three daughters, Leilani Villanueva Maynard, Lorraine Villanueva, and Kim Bosarge of Wilmington, N.C. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Tina, Tracey, Michael Jr., Amanda, Tara, Stephanie, Matthew, Tammy, Amber, Devin, Danielle, Dalin, Caitlin and Adam; and three great-grandchildren, Destini, Michael Dallas, and Gabriella Maria.
An avid boxer, fisherman and traveler, Bill will be remembered as a happy go-lucky guy with only positive words and always a smile on his face. He was a man whose spirit will remain at sea, but whose soul is now in the hands of the Lord.
A funeral mass will be held at 11a.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, at St. Jerome Catholic Church, 116 Denbigh Blvd. in Newport News. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the American Heart Association , P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23508-5216, in memory of Blas.
