Margrethe Petersen, daughter of Ebbe and Anna Katrina (Skjerning-Leth) Hansen, was born March 29, 1929, in Hazelchrist, (sic) Illinois, and passed away January 26, 1989, after a lengthy illness, in the Webster County Hospital in Red Cloud, Nebraska, at the age of 59 years.
She was baptized at home March 30, 1929, by Rev. P.C. Paulsen, and confirmed May 14, 1944, in Spencer, Iowa, by Rev. John M. Jensen.
She attended Spencer High School in Spencer, Iowa, and Dana College in Blair, Nebraska.
On December 3, 1950, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa, she was married to Donald C. Petersen. This union was blessed with five children.
She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Ruskin, ladies chorus, a Sunday school teacher, Bethel teacher, cub scouts den mother, Superior Art Guild, American Lutheran Church Women, American Legion Auxiliary, and Women's Club.
Margrethe enjoyed oil painting, loved her grandchildren dearly, spent many hours putting jig saw puzzles together, reading and singing.
After the death of her husband Donald on February 15, 1985, she moved to the long term care unit in the Webster County Hospital and had lived there for the past three years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Donald; a son Steven Curtis Petersen; and one sister, Karen Olsen.
She is survived by her children, David and his wife Karen, Paul and his wife Marcella, all of Ruskin, Mark and his wife Dianne of Juniata, and Carol and her husband Kevin Wulf of Superior; five grandchildren, Justin, Kaj, Seth, Jerod and Krista Petersen; and her mother Anna Sondergaard of St. Luke's Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 29, 1989, at 2:30 p.m. from the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, Nebraska, with Pastor John Plowman and Pastor Harold Laursen officiating. Music was provided by Verlan and Janet Mussmann singing a duiet of "I Believe In A Hill Called Mt. Calvary" and congregational hymns of "The King Of Love My Shepherd Is," "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Lord of All Hopefulness" with Hildegarde Hansen as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were Randall Peterson, Roger Kastrup, Wayne Petersen, Doyle Christensen, John Kaldahl and Lynn Sorensen. Burial was in the Spring Creek Cemetery near Ruskin. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska, was in charge of the arrangements.
