Note: Unable to find any information regarding Catherine Macauley (1940-1962), including census records, death records, obituary or grave marker.
The first wife of Edward Macauley (1837-1916) was Catharine Kearney. They married on 04 Feb 1862 in Calhoun County, Illinois. He remarried on 20 Dec 1863 in St. Louis, Missouri, suggesting that his first wife may have died sometime between the 2 dates.
According to the 1860 census, an Irishwoman named Catherine Kearney was working as a servant in LaSalle County, Illinois. She was 19-years-old on the census, meaning that she was born in 1840 or 1841.
Dates in old record books and on old headstones are often difficult to read. If the dates on this memorial were misread by exactly 100 years--meaning that the correct dates were actually 1840-1862--this woman could possibly be Edward Macauley's first wife, Catharine Kearney Macauley. The dates would fit exactly with the known information about Catherine Kearney, and it would also explain why Edward married again so soon after his first marriage in 1862.
Unable to confirm at this time.

Note: Old St. Mary's Cemetery book recorded Catherine's last name as McCauley. However, during this time period, all known Calhoun County families with this surname actually spelled it Macauley. Unable to locate any marker for Catherine's grave.
