"When seventeen years old Thomas DeLoach Bush enlisted in the Confedate army and served under the immortal Stonewall Jackson through Virginia and was wounded during the second Battle of Manassas. After a furlough he again enlisted, was captured by the enemy and exchanged. In the year 1864 he married and in 1876 was ordained as a minister of the gospel by Juniper Grove Baptist Church, located about five miles south of the present town of Poplarville, Miss. The town of Poplarville was built on his farm from which he moved in 1879. He attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. following which he pastored churches in Mississippi and Louisana, moving to Keatchie, Louisiana, where his children attended the Baptist College established prior to the Civil War.

"During his ministry he built fourteen church buildings, six in Miss. and eight in Louisiana. On his fiftieth birthday he was on board the Steamship Wheelock on Red River and inscribed the following in the fly-leaf of his bible: "I am this day fifty years old, and it is with profound gratitude to God that I make this record of His service has proved to me that "He is the chiefs of ten thousands and altogether lovely." I now without and known reservations commit my worldly loves and interests to Him who has said, "I will never leave thee nor forsake the.' Bless the Lord, O my soul" T. D. Bush, April 26, 1894
