She was named after her maternal aunt Augusta Henderson Hildebrand.

"Gussie" and her husband and their two daughters left their home in Chicago to move to San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. Her husband was a pipefitter and anticipated there would be plenty of work in a city that was being rebuilt.

After spending several weeks visiting her Derby first cousins in Utah (sisters Winnifred Derby Layton, Cleve Derby, and Mary Louise Derby Haight), she and her family arrived in San Francisco in 1907, where they found no housing. She became ill, living on the dunes in the west side of the peninsula, and she did not adjust to the dampness and fog in San Francisco.

She gave birth to her only son in San Francisco, but he was not well, a blue baby, and he did not live more than a couple of weeks. She was completely devastated, and her husband took care of the burial arrangements at a Catholic cemetery in Colma.

She and her daughters went to homestead in a warmer area, in Colony One, near Gridley, not far from Yuba City, while her husband lived and worked in San Francisco. He would come back to Gridley to visit the family once a month or so.

Her eldest daughters remarked that they had known their maternal grandparents and were quite close to them in Chicago, but there was no receipt of even one letter from Chicago, once the family had left for California. Certainly, the parting was under bad terms.

Augusta died of ovarian cancer at age 37 (based on her birthdate shown in the 1900 U.S. Census). Decades later, three of her four daughters suffered untimely deaths due to cancer. The fourth daughter, Ruth, lived to the ripe old age of 99 after surviving three different cancers. Certainly, cancer runs in the family.

Augusta was survived by her family:

In San Francisco, California -- her husband John, age 51;
in Butte county, California -- her daughters Mary Isabel (known as Ysabel), age 14 ; Leda, age 12; Augustina (known as Ruth), age 9; and Cleve (known as Claire), age 5;
In Chicago, Illinois -- her parents Danforth (known as Charles), age 60, and Phebe (known as Bell), age 58; and two sisters: Leda, and Clara.
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin -- her maternal aunt Augusta Henderson Hildebrand, and family
In Union, Oregon -- her maternal aunt Mary Henderson Derby, and family
