William D. Smith came to Illinois in the early 1800's. Known to all as "TANNER BILL". He was married three times, (1) "Lady" Burkhart (2) Lucy Duncan and (3) to Matilda Smith. He would produce 13 children. He died in the Anna State Hospital, Union County. The exact place of his burial is unknown.
In the early 1830's "Tanner" started up a tanning business near the area know as Wagon Town, just south of Goreville, Illinois. He is documented as having started the First conscription school in Johnson County. This school later became known as the Dunn Town School. His eldest son Capt Marmaduke Smith, was the first school teacher.
