Nancy Shippen was the daughter of Dr. William Shippen, Jr. of Philadelphia and Alice Lee of Virginia. At the age of 16 she fell in love with Louis-Guillaume Otto, aide to the French ambassador to the newly formed United States. Otto proposed; Nancy and her mother agreed. However, Dr. Shippen, with an eye to the main chance, decided that his young daughter would marry Henry Beekman Livingston of the famous Livingstons of New York. Livingston, a Colonel in the Continental Army, soon showed his true colors; spoilt and profligate, Livingston bullied his wife until she finally left him, taking their daughter Peggy with her when she returned to her parents in Philadelphia. Later she sued for divorce, but the New York State legislature found for Livingston. Shortly thereafter, Otto married Livingston's cousin Elizabeth. Once Otto was safely married, Livingston sued Nancy for a divorce on the grounds of desertion and won. Elizabeth died in 1787 following the birth of a daughter Eliza Otto. Despite being divorced, Livingston continued to bully and threaten his wife and Otto's reputations. In 1790, Otto married for a second time to Fanny de Crevecoeur and had a daughter Sophie. While they had maintained an intimate correspondence for many years, Nancy and Otto never communicated again after his second marriage. Otto died in 1817. At age 16 Peggy chose to live permanently with her mother, and together they lived a reclusive life. Nancy's journal and letters from Otto were published in 1935. (bio by: Karen Mullian)
