Author, minister. Edward Everett Hale was the nephew of the orator Edward Everett and son of an editor in Boston; he later married the niece of novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe. He entered Harvard at age 13 and graduated with the class of 1839. He became a teacher, editor, and writer of essays and short stories (including "The Man Without a Country") before holding minister positions in Worcester and Boston, Massachusetts. In these roles, he advocated various reforms and was a founding member of the Unitarian Church of America. He later became Chaplain of the US Senate in 1903. Hale was also an outspoken abolitionist.
