BURLINGTON --- Charles E. Gash, 69, Burlington, died at his home on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, surrounded by his family.

He was born Jan. 4, 1935, in Woodward, Okla., the son of John and Evelyn Gash.

He married Evonne Lillian Eggers on Aug. 5, 1956, at Fairmont, Okla. They moved to Burlington in August of 1962.

He is survived by Evonne and their three daughters and families, Brenda and Terry Cox, of Burlington, and their daughters Megan and April, Kimbra and Len Henry, of Topeka, and their daughters, Katie and Cassidy, and Cindra and Mark Mason, of Lamar, Mo., and their sons, Bryce and Brett. He also is survived by his brothers and sister, Jim, Les and Bob Gash, and Barbara Semrad.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Betty Connor Anderson.

Charles graduated from Phillips University at Enid and received his Master of Science degree from Oklahoma State University in 1966. "Mr. Gash," as he was known, considered it a privilege to dedicate his life to students and education. His career in education spanned 38 years, beginning in Plains, teaching and coaching in the beginning, and ultimately serving as high school principal in Burlington for 20 years, and at Central Heights for 11 years. He received many honorary degrees, was recognized by Kansas FHA as "Administrator of the Year" in 1984, and was inducted into the Kansas Teacher's Hall of Fame at Dodge City in June of 1984.

Charles did his civic duty over the years serving various capacities, including president of the Burlington Rotary Club. He also served as chairman of the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church at Burlington for the past 35 years.

He was loved deeply by those who knew him and respected by all who came in contact with him. He was adored by his daughters and grandchildren. Throughout his illness, he comforted his family with these words, "We don't know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future."

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at Burlington. The family will visit with friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Hour Ministries, Trinity Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society, and sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 277, Burlington, 66839.
