BALDWYN - Col. Johnnie - John Robert Arnold died Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at the Baldwyn Nursing Facility. He was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Baldwyn to Fred and Myrtle Grissom Arnold. He graduated from Baldwyn High School, attended Georgia Tech and graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in electrical engineering.

He entered active military service on June 11, 1942, as a second lieutenant. He made the Normandy landing and served in the battles of Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland in Central Europe, serving in the U.S. Army's Signal Corps. He was awarded the Soldier's Medal for Heroism on Aug. 2, 1944, near St. Lo, France. He also received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal for participation in the Philippine liberation. He later served in the National Guard, retiring May 26, 1970, with the rank of colonel. He was the author of the published book "Johnnie's War."

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Baldwyn, where he served for a number of years as a Sunday School teacher and as a member of the Board of Deacons. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rites. Until his health prevented, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Farmers and Merchants Bank. He was a merchant, a restaurant owner, a farmer, a hunter and a fisherman.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn with Dr. Gayle Alexander officiating. A military burial service will follow at the Baldwyn Masonic Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Laurie Arnold; a daughter, Mary Nell Garner and husband, Jim, of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Betty Arnold of Maumelle, Ark.; a stepdaughter, Carol E. Allen of Baldwyn; a stepson, Sam Allen and wife, Carol, of Knoxville, Tenn.; a grandson, Kent Garner of Raleigh, N.C.; three granddaughters, Kim Mains and husband, John Paul, of Maumelle, Ark., Kelli Moore and husband, Brad, of Longville, La., and Hollie Garner of Durham, N.C.; three stepgranddaughters, Melissa Allen of Chattanooga, Tenn., Jennifer Allen of Knoxville, Tenn., and Becky Allen of New York City; four great-grandchildren, Kayla and Emily Mains, and Matthew and Andrew Moore.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Mary Louise Pettigrew Arnold, and a son, John Robert "Robin" Arnold.

Pallbearers will be Steve Minor, Wayne Minor, Dan Bishop, Chip Hurdle, Jim Pettigrew, Landon Huey, Steve Walker and Harold Dean Grissom.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Board of Directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank, Guy Gravlee, Fred Bennett, Jack Hamblin, Billy Glover, Buddy Wardlaw, Bruce McElroy, Billy Orval Spain, Fred Green, Jimmy Cunningham and the Old Roosters Coffee Club.
