Stephanie was born on June 30, 1972. She was the beloved daughter of Donald and Joyce Hebert. She was a resident of Waggaman, LA. In May 1978, Stephanie graduated kindergarten at Live Oak Manor Elementary School.
On June 13, 1978, Stephanie, age 5, went to play at her neighbor's house in Waggaman and was never seen again. A massive search for her was conducted by FBI agents, journalists, psychics, and thousands of volunteers. Her parents held a press conference to plead for her safe return. Hundreds of supposed sightings of Stephanie were reported, but none panned out. As the search continued, Stephanie's 6th birthday on June 30 went by without her.
In November 1978, almost six months after her disappearance, Stephanie's remains were found in a rural area of St. Charles Parish, LA.
Stephanie's funeral was held December 9, 1978, at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Waggaman. She was laid to rest in Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna, LA. Stephanie is survived by her loving parents, grandparents, sister, brothers, extended family, friends, classmates, and neighbors. She has never been forgotten, and her small hometown of Waggaman is still haunted by her case and holds her in their hearts.
Tragically, Stephanie's case has never been solved.
Note: The date of death on Stephanie's gravestone is December 9, 1978, the day her funeral was held. She probably died shortly after she was abducted in June.
